Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that is intended
to reconstruct the female vaginal canal or, in the case of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery or female
neovaginoplasty, to actually build a new vaginal structure. Any type of reconstructive vaginal surgery in the field
of plastic surgery is usually referred to as vaginoplasty.
The procedure is usually availed by women with damaged, underdeveloped or malformed
vaginal structures that are due to cancer, congenital disease or injury. Vaginoplasty surgery may also be performed
for vagina reduction, vagina repair, or vagina tightening after childbirth. Another term that is associated to the
procedure and is used to refer to non-reconstructive vaginoplasty is vaginal rejuvenation surgery.
The main benefit of vaginoplasty is that it enables women and trans women to engage
in sexual intercourse that would otherwise would not be afforded by a damaged, malformed or non-existent vagina. As
such, many patients have already undergone vaginoplasty surgery in many countries for the past several
years.
