Prominent Ear
Repair
Prominent ear repair or otoplasty is a plastic surgery operation designed to set
prominent ears back closer to the head. Ear plastic surgery to "pin back" the external ear occurs anytime after the
age of four years.
The otoplasty is an outpatient procedure in which use of a general anesthetic
for children and sedation with local anesthesia in adults occurs. One or both of the ears may be prominent. The
incision for the otoplasty is at the back of the ear, the ear cartilage exposed and permanent sutures placed. A
fold in the cartilage is created and the sutures are tied so the ear is the correct distance from the head. The
skin is closed and an otoplasty ear dressing applied.
Infection or a hematoma may occur after otoplasty but is uncommon. Pain control is
with mild medication after the otoplasty.
