Nose Surgery

The rhinoplasty is a nose operation to reshape the external appearance of the nose. The rhinoplasty plastic surgery procedure involves incisions made inside the nose. A hump is removed, a wide bridge narrowed or a bulbous or drooping tip modified with the rhinoplasty procedure. The span of the nostrils reduced and the angle between the nose and the upper lip changed with the rhinoplasty procedure. Reduction or enlargement of the nose is possible. Teenagers who desire a rhinoplasty should wait until their growth spurt is complete.

A rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure. Risks include bleeding and infection. Swelling and bruising occur. For a week after surgery, a nasal splint is worn. Most patients can return to work in a week or two after surgery. Refinements may require a second minor "touch up" procedure.

Nose surgery is sometimes necessary to correct congenital anomalies, or the sequelae of trauma (crooked nose), tumors and infection. Surgery to change the appearance of the nose does not affect breathing but surgery on internal structures such as a deviated septum can improve breathing. Correction of a deviated septum occurs separately or in conjunction with a rhinoplasty.
