Liposuction Surgery - Criteria
To Be A Candidate
In many parts of the world, liposuction is among the
most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for both men and women. Cosmetic liposuction is so common that in the
United States as much as half a billion dollars (or more) are spent annually for liposuction
surgery.
People with weight problems are the ideal market forliposuction. However, it should
be noted that not all individuals who are overweight can automatically qualify forlipo surgery. Prior consultation
with a board certified plastic surgeon is needed to confirm whether a patient is a candidate forliposuction
surgery.
In 2009, almost 200,000 lipoplastyprocedures were performed in the United States.
This highlights the desire of many people to look slimmer and to be in better shape. There is however a downward
trend for the number of lipo surgery procedures since the year 2000. It is more than likely that the decrease in
the number of lipo procedures is attributable to the economic downturn. However it is also possible that
alternative weight loss programs have become effective for many people thus reducing the need for cosmetic surgery
procedures.
Criteria for Liposuction Surgery
Despite what some people may think obesity does not necessarily qualify a person
for suction lipectomy. In fact, people at risk of cardiovascular issues or diabetes, such as those who are
extremely overweight, are less qualified for a lipectomy procedure. A person who wants to avail of liposuction
should have a fair enough level of health. Other factors such as epilepsy, conditions related to the immune system,
blood-related issues and other life-threatening medical conditions will disqualify a person from the
procedure.
Aside from being in good health, plastic surgeons may also require that the patient
be between 18 to 45 years old. However, this is not an issue about age but more of suitability in terms of the
elasticity of the patient’s skin and overall quality of the tissues of the body. Smokers are also discouraged from
getting a lipoplasty procedure.
Another important criterion forliposuction surgery is their overall body mass. The
patient should be within 30% of their ideal body weight. Persons who are heavier than this limit will be advised to
reduce their weight by diet and exercise. Furthermore, persons who will undergo liposuction should pursue an
effective weight management program before and after the procedure to maximize the benefits of
liposuction.
