Eyelid Surgery Procedure - Modification of Upper and Lower Eyelids

Plastic surgery that is done on the eyelids is calledblepharoplasty or simplyeyelid surgery. It is a very delicate procedure that can be used to repair damaged eyelids or to enhance the eyelids’ appearance in accordance to the patient’s wishes. Depending on the person’s circumstance,eyelid surgery procedurecan be purely cosmetic or it can be a corrective surgery for certain medical conditions affecting the eyelids.

Lower Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Blepharoplasty surgery may involve the lower eyelids or the upper eyelids. As far as cosmetic surgery is concerned, lower eyelid surgery is most commonly performed to remove a patient’s puffy "eye bags" and to smoothen out wrinkles around the eyes.

Bags under the eyes may be caused by an excess of fatty tissues or may simply be the loss of elasticity of the skin around the eyes due to aging. A qualified cosmetic surgeon can perform an eyelid surgery procedure to remove the excess skin and fat in the lower eyelids.

Upper Eyelid Surgery Procedure

In comparison, upper eyelid surgery is usually done to enhance the appearance of the eyes by adding a fold on the upper eyelid. This is also called double eyelid surgery or may also be referred to as Asian blepharoplasty. The reference to Asians is due to the fact that around half of the Asian population worldwide has a "single eyelid" trait which is marked by eyelids that do not have a crease or fold.

There is nothing inherently wrong with having single eyelid feature but because of Western standards of beauty where having a double eyelid trait is appealing, many Asians choose to undergo double eyelid surgery.

Upper eyelid surgery is also conducted to correct droopy eyelids, otherwise known as eyelid ptosis. Also, apart from cosmetic purposes, eyelid surgery procedure can be used for reshaping or reconstructing eyelids damaged by injury or disease such as certain type of cancers.
