Understanding Breast
Reconstruction Surgery
Before undergoing plastic or cosmetic surgery, it is good to know what you want to
achieve and why you want to achieve it. Some people don’t even know what they are talking about when it comes to
getting either plastic or cosmetic surgery. Though it may seem identical, these two has different
functions.
Plastic surgery which is also called reconstructive surgery is a procedure that
helps fix any abnormal feature in different areas of the body. While cosmetic surgery is an operation that helps to
enhance a normal body part to look even better and to boost ones self-esteem.
Breast Reconstruction surgery is often labeled as a plastic surgery as it involves
reconstruction of a malformed breast possibly due to the removal of breast to cure cancer. It can help restore the
appearance and feel of the breast for women who have lost it after prophylactic mastectomy.
Breast Reconstruction after Prophylactic Mastectomy
A patient after going through prophylactic mastectomy has an option to have breast
reconstruction immediately after mastectomy. Breast reconstruction surgery begins in redoing the breast mass and
patient can request for a reconstruction of nipple and areola subsequently. Reconstruction of nipple can be done
with the use of medical tattooing and transplanted tissues.
Breast reconstruction surgery can be performed by utilizing tissue expander before
placing an implant. Breast implant comes in different types, sizes and shapes. The most popular however are silicon
and saline breast implants. There were other implants being made-up but the materials used are different like the
gummy bear implant. This type of implant is leak-resistant as it is developed by the use of cohesive silicone gel
and carries the constancy of gummy bears.
However, implants made up of cohesive gel were not approved by FDA or Food and Drug
Administration not unless it is used for medical trials. Another alternative for breast reconstruction is by using
the patient’s own tissues usually obtained from areas at the back, buttocks and belly to restore the appearance of
the breast. Though it could be a good method to use, there is a possibility that the surgery would still require an
implant.
There are some instances where the patient is unhappy with the outcome of the
breast reconstruction and is requesting for another surgery to enhance the result. A board certified cosmetic
surgeon is the best doctor to handle this concern as they have wider understanding on cosmetic surgery.
Fat injections could be a good option for touch-up procedure. It can enhance the
form of the breast and corrects some imperfections like implant rumpling and dimpling. Transferring of tissue is
needed to create balance and to fill up major indentations.
While reconstruction of breast can be a good choice to achieve once more the
natural appearance of your breast after prophylactic breast removal, it may also bring another risk that can be
harmful to your health. Therefore, it is recommended to arrange a follow up plan with your surgeon to monitor your
condition as deem necessary. Be always, protective to your overall health.
