Breast
Augmentation
The plastic surgery procedure to enlarge and enhance the shape of the breasts is
breast augmentation. Currently, only saline breast implants are available for use in breast augmentation in the
United States of America. Women who seek breast augmentation have small breasts, asymmetry of the breasts, or have
lost volume and shape of their breasts after pregnancy.
Incision choices in the breast augmentation procedure for insertion of the breast
implant include the breast crease, around the nipple-areolar complex, or through the axilla (armpit). Options for
placement of the breast implant is either behind the breast or its underlying muscles.
Particular to saline breast implants there is a small risk of deflation and
wrinkling. Scar tissue forms around the breast implant. This is normal. If the scar thickens, the breast will feel
firmer than normal and possibly somewhat uncomfortable. Infection and bleeding are small risk factors in breast
augmentation and treatment may require a second operation. Nipple sensation may change. There is no evidence that
breast implants affect fertility, pregnancy, or the ability to nurse. If the plastic surgery procedure, breast
augmentation, is performed after nursing, milk may be produced for a few days after surgery.
Research has found no clear link with silicone breast implants and connective
tissue disorders but ongoing studies continue. There is no evidence that breast implants cause breast cancer. For
patients with breast implants special views are required during mammography.
